Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) was an important Italian composer and violinist of the 18th century, who was known primarily for his sacred and operatic works. His Stabat Mater is probably the best known of his works and is still considered a masterpiece of church music.
Pergolesi composed this work on behalf of the Neapolitan noble lay brotherhood "Cavalieri della Vergine dei Dolori di San Luigi al Palazzo", who commissioned the work for use during Holy Week. Shortly after its publication, the young composer died at the age of 26 from the effects of tuberculosis. The work is therefore considered his last completed composition.
In the very emotional arias and duets, Pergolesi captures the pain of Mother Mary at the sight of the crucified Jesus.
We invite the audience to be moved by the timeless beauty of the Italian composer's music and by the sadness and hope that lie dormant in the music.
Admission is free. Donations are requested.
